Healthcare facilities depend on building systems that perform reliably every hour of every day. As part of the Cleveland Clinic Weston’s 196,000-square-foot Emergency Department Expansion, the project team delivered new patient care spaces alongside a major Central Utility Plant designed to support the hospital’s long-term operational needs. Before patients and caregivers could depend on these systems, every component needed to be thoroughly tested and verified. 
 
Motz Engineering provided commissioning services directly to the Construction Manager at Risk (CMR), serving as the connection between construction completion and operational readiness. Commissioning services included mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the Emergency Department expansion, with responsibilities including drawing reviews, submittal reviews, pre-functional testing, and functional performance testing to verify that building systems operated in accordance with the design intent. 
 
A key component of the project was commissioning the new Central Utility Plant, which included a 4,000-ton chilled water system, two 2-megawatt emergency generators, and five 800-ton cooling towers. These systems provide the reliable infrastructure necessary to support continuous hospital operations, making performance verification an essential part of the project before occupancy and patient care could begin. 
 
Throughout commissioning, Motz Engineering worked collaboratively with the construction manager, design team, contractors, and hospital representatives to verify system performance, document results, and support a smooth transition from construction to facility operations. This collaborative approach helped identify issues before occupancy and reduce operational risk for the hospital’s facilities team.
