Upgrading Critical Airport Systems With Constructability and Continuity in Mind

Modernizing critical airport systems is one challenge. Doing it without disrupting daily operations is another. At Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), the Terminal Building and Concourses A and B required significant upgrades to the chilled water hydronic system, including pumps, cooling towers and air handling units. The work demanded careful engineering, precise coordination and a clear understanding of the operational and security requirements of an active international airport.

Motz Engineering provided professional electrical engineering services to support the mechanical upgrades project. The team began with a comprehensive feasibility study that evaluated the previous 12 months of energy consumption, anticipated electrical loads, and the capacity of the existing electrical distribution system. This early analysis helped establish a clear path forward while supporting informed investment decisions for the owner.

To improve constructability, Motz Engineering utilized point-cloud modeling to identify clash-free routing for large 300A+ electrical feeders. The team also used its MEquipment Revit plug-in to monitor equipment connections and identify coordination issues during design. Multiple power distribution options, including both 480V switchboards and 12,470V service, were evaluated before the basis of design equipment was selected. Because major equipment was pre-purchased to maintain the aggressive project schedule, Motz also provided ongoing cost estimating and engineering support throughout design and construction.

All field investigations and construction activities required close coordination with airport personnel and secure badging for project staff. Construction phasing was carefully planned to maintain safety, security and uninterrupted airport operations while critical infrastructure improvements were completed.

The project demonstrates how early analysis, constructability planning and disciplined coordination can help modernize essential airport infrastructure while protecting reliability, security and day-to-day operations.
