OSU Battery Cell Research and Demo Center

Engineering the infrastructure behind next generation battery innovation.

Advanced battery research requires more than sophisticated equipment. It depends on highly specialized building systems that can support exacting laboratory conditions and the transition from scientific discovery to pilot-scale production. The Ohio State University’s Battery Cell Research & Demonstration Center was created to provide that environment while fostering collaboration between academic researchers and industry partners.

Motz Engineering provided plumbing and fire protection engineering for the 25,000-square-foot research facility, which includes ISO 7 clean rooms, ultra-low humidity dry rooms, and highly specialized laboratory spaces supporting battery assembly, testing, and prototyping.

Together, these systems provide the reliable infrastructure researchers need to safely develop next-generation battery technologies while allowing the facility to adapt as research and production needs evolve.

The project supports The Ohio State University’s collaboration with industry leaders while creating an environment capable of transitioning innovative ideas from laboratory research to pilot-scale production. By integrating specialized building systems with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the facility helps position Ohio as a leader in battery technology and advanced manufacturing.

The completed Battery Cell Research & Demonstration Center demonstrates Motz Engineering’s ability to deliver specialized engineering solutions for complex research environments where precision, safety, and reliability are essential to scientific advancement.
