Over the past decade, Motz Engineering helped modernize the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems that support Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library’s downtown Main Library. Through a series feasibility plans, phased renovations, and infrastructure improvements, Motz Engineering has helped extend the life of this 250,000+ sq. ft.landmark civic building while improving energy performance, accessibility, and the visitor experience.
The Main Library Next Generation initiative represented a significant milestone in that long-term partnership. Building upon years of infrastructure upgrades, the project reimagined the public spaces within the library while enhancing the building systems that support daily operations.
Motz Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for the visitor-focused renovation, as well as specialty architectural lighting that complemented the library’s new design vision. Earlier phases of work included energy retrofit improvements, major mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrades, and engineering for the building’s skylight and elevator modernization projects. Together, these investments improved building efficiency, modernized aging infrastructure, and enhanced comfort and accessibility for library visitors.
One of the most recognizable features of the renovation is the new Social Stairs, a welcoming gathering space that celebrates Cincinnati’s rich musical heritage while creating new opportunities for community engagement. Behind the scenes, upgraded building systems provide the reliable infrastructure needed to support these modern public spaces while preserving the functionality of one of the region’s most important civic institutions.
As part of Ensuring, Support, and Strengthen Phases of the IMPRESS process, Motz Engineering provided extensive Construction Administration services to ensure the building’s mechanical and electrical systems functioned as designed and commissioned.
Completed on schedule and within budget, the Main Library Next Generation project demonstrates how thoughtful engineering can preserve the character of an existing building while preparing it to serve future generations.
